FINAL!!!! landscape

Hey!!! I just made some changes because my housemates where talking about the eating stapler and what if there was an army......now there is :)

Landscape of the absurd

Rossco adventures into his imagination....the landscape of the absurd. I went for a comic style using multiple pictures to create the back ground. I then used some scanned objects that don't really belong together to discombobulate the image a little. I then placed Rossco on a stage as he looks like thats where he belongs.

APPRAISAL

After completing my poster I can see that I have taken on bored some of what the posters I researched used. I used simple color scheme and not making it to busy.

I have used line in my image to create depth. To lines running up the centre of the image (in the form of the yellow brick road) create a depth of field. This stops the imaging being flat and gives it another dimension.

As far as shape goes I used a lot of geometric shapes such as semi-circles triangles etc. These where used because they clearly resemble certain things such as hills or the sun rays. I used abstract shapes as clouds and natural shapes for the small tuffs of grass.

When it comes to color I used an Analogous color system. I choose these colors as they represented the natural color of the objects I was portraying in my picture.

Texture has been used in a couple of ways in my image. The font has a brick texture. I generated this by hand. I drew each letter that I need by hand and drew on the bricks. I then scanned in the letters and constructed my text with them. I think this has been successful as something I have never done before. I also applied texture the grass, I used a solid green and then applied a noise filter with motion blur to achieve this. The clouds also have a ‘fluffy’ texture that was created using a soft brush.

Over all I am happy with my poster. I’m sure if I had a more extensive knowledge in photoshop and in drawing I could have produced a far more professional picture but for my skill level I’m very happy, and practice makes perfect!

My Poster Idea

So after much thought I decided to make up my own music festival.

THE YELLOW BRICK ROAD
Music Festival

The Yellow Brick Road Festival will be a music festival that is aimed at a young demographic of people who enjoy indie and the latest artists. It would be across to days with bands and artists such as
The Cat Empire, Josh Pyke, Laura Marling, Jose Gonzalez, Adele, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, Sarah Blasko, Regina Spektor etc. The festival wouldn't only be about music but also about the environment with the opportunity for local green groups to set up stalls and give information. There would be a festival village where local market stalls can set up and sell local items and sell local foods.

I want the atmosphere to be laid back and relaxed. But for the air to be full of excitement and for the night time to be like a huge party. With the campsite not far from the main stage. The venue would be just outside of a major centre on farm land. This would help prevent disturbance to locals and help put money in farmers pockets when they need it the most.

Promotion would be through awesome posters and local radio stations and the internet. The festival would be held during the festival season (December and January) on a weekend.

So why is it called the Yellow Brick Road Music Festival? Well wanted to follow it to Oz, and bands and people can follow it to Oz to experience The best local and international music acts around at the present time!

stay posted ill put up some of my sketches soon!

and some more inspiration

Here are some of the posters I found that have good use of contrast

• Explain how the design concept is used.
The contrast in this image is between the color insert of the sun against the monochrome color of the rest of the poster.
• Comment on line, shape, texture and colour in the image.
There is a great amount of line used in this image to create texture all the text has been created by hand to give it that 'sketch' look, line has been used to create the wood feel for the tree and the still water feel as well. The colors are maily monochrome or analogous in the case of the orange and yellow.
• what you like about each image?
I like the style of this image, the fact that it looks 100% hand drawn and doesn't have that manufactured look about it.
• how will it influence your poster?
Im thinking i might create my own text as like the effect it has.

• Explain how the design concept is used.
Contrast in this image is between the busyness of the lines and the soft background. This draws the eyes down the lines to the book which is the point of focus.
• Comment on line, shape, texture and colour in the image.
This line in this image is what I would describe as a flowing line. Like it is caught in the wind. The colors are almost Triadic with the red/orange, green and blue almost being equally apart on the color wheel.Texture i see in the hair, the little boys curly and corse and the grass being soft. and the clouds wispy.
• what you like about each image?
What I like about this image is the strange idea of the girls hair turning into stories and fairy tails leading us down to the book which is no doubt full of these things.
• how will it influence your poster?
Having looked at lots of images now ive almost made up my mind on how i want to create my poster. Im going to have a yellow brick road in mine as the festival is going to be called the yellow brick road music festival. So i want my road to be fun and happy like the girls hair in this image.

• Explain how the design concept is used.
Shape is how the contrast is created in this image it actually rather clever. The bright yellow back ground against the white rectangle also creates a striking contrast.
• Comment on line, shape, texture and colour in the image.
Shape in this image is rather important and plays a big part. The poster which is a rectangle has a man holding another rectangle inside it. So it is almost like a frame to this blank rectangle in the middle. This is obviously a photographic image so texture is very real . The lines on the floor give depth and edges of the CD rack in the background gives hight.
• what you like about each image?
I like that the image has subtle things in it that suggest what it is about. The saxophone on the edge of the image and the word African on one of the books in the bottom right. The objects placed around the image, it is a classic example of mise-en-scene communicating what this image is about. A African blues festival.
• how will it influence your poster?
I think i said this about one of the other posters and how I want my poster to be able to communicate just by looking at it not reading the text what sort of festival it is going to be.

• Explain how the design concept is used.
Light and the use of negative space is how contrast is used in this picture. The light washes out the picture at the top caused by very high contrast compared to the bottom where there are the golden brown colors. Focus on the leaf gives it a very crisp look as well compared to the soft background.
• Comment on line, shape, texture and colour in the image.
Color in this photo is monochromatic. and it works fantastically. Line obviously is very natural as it is a photo of a nature subject. The focus on the leaf compared to the soft focus of the background really heightens the crispy texture of the leaf it looks like if you poked it, it would just crumble and crack.
• what you like about each image?
I love the color in this photo i think the monochromatic color works fanatically
• how will it influence your poster?
Im not sure exactly how this will affect my poster. Im pretty set on the use of negative space and i suppose this being another image i choose to talk about shows that as it has large negative space in it.

Poster inspiration

So this is the Spotted Cow 08 festival poster that I found on the net (accessed 12/08/2009, http://mattcoleman.us/files/gimgs/43_sc08poster.jpg)

Explain how the design concept is used.

I think it is a great example of the use of negative space. The milk bottle is completely isolated by the negative space and what works well is it is an unusual object to just be by itself. Its a modern 'pop art' style of image that draws you in and makes you want to read what small amount of text is on the poster.

• Comment on line, shape, texture and colour in the image.

There is minimal line in this picture, what line there is very vertical. It is a defining line that outlines the subect from the background but also creates a sense of 3D within the picture.

Shape again is minimal due the large amount of negative space. What shape does stand out is the puddle of milk at the bottom of the carton as the only white 'thing' on the page. Along with the iconic shape of the speech bubble there isn't a lot of shape in the image as there is say colour.

Most of the image is matt and is made up of solid colours giving it the pop art feel. So texture isn't really present the only thing i can pick up on it the roughness of the solid black line outlining the milk carton.

• what you like about each image?

I love the simplicity of this image. It works so well with the negative space. The simple colors that use the analogous style with Yellow and green sitting next to each other on the color wheel.

• how will it influence your poster?

I really like the idea of negative space in my work so I am going to try incorporate a large amount of it in my poster I also like the style of drawing this has been done in almost like a cartoon.

The Next poster that I want to have a look in regards to negative space is this, the 'Blue Notes Festival'. (accsessed 12/08/2009, http://www.stanwoodesign.com/archives/images/bluenotes.png)

Explain how the design concept is used.
This poster is basically negative space, The text Jazz is surrounded completely by the negative space with the letter 'A' in jazz even being formed by the negative space. This really makes the word jazz stand out and make it clear what the festival is all about.
• Comment on line, shape, texture and colour in the image.
The way this poster has been designed means it actually lacks a lot of elements that would be found in a say more standard poster. It has no images, it is only made up of text, there is no line that provokes any sort of depth of field, it is a flat image made of solid colors. The colors are complementary with the orange and purple blue being opposite colors on the color wheel.
• what you like about each image?
I'm not sure if I like how simple this image is but I do like the solid colors
• how will it influence your poster?
I dont think i will be that influenced by this poster when it comes to creating mine even though like i said before I do like the use of negative space. But I dont like the use of just text

Explain how the design concept is used.
This poster has again used negative space very well allowing room for text and also highlighting the silhouette and the image inside the silhouette. I think this is a really good idea and I like it a lot.
• Comment on line, shape, texture and colour in the image.
I feel like the line formed by the silhouette makes it feel like it is dancing I know this is obvious by looking at the silhouette but the line gives it movement the line of the image flows from left to right. As far as shape the silhouette is the obvious one it creates a window where we can look through to a girl who has a great contrast compared to the rest of the black and white image. She has a very smooth texture that reminds me of and elegance.
• what you like about each image?
What I like about this particular image is its ability to communicate what the festival is about. It is in a different language but just by looking at it I think that it would be some sort of european ethnic festival that celebrates where a certain culture comes from through song and dance.
• how will it influence your poster?
I really want to be able to communicate the theme/style of festival through my poster as well as this one does.

Explain how the design concept is used.
What I have discovered from this and the previous 3 images is that negative space will draw the eye to one particular image/shape, especially when the shape is very simplistic. In the festival posters it allows the information to be easily displayed and conveys the message really well, but in some cases makes it hard to establish what the festival is about.
• Comment on line, shape, texture and colour in the image.
Yet again I find myself looking at an image in that has no depth of field the line is very simple and the shapes 2D. This pop art style seems to be very appealing to my eye. There is no texture as its comprised of solid colors but I think that this simple graphic style really suits this sort of 'retro' comeback that seems to be part of modern young culture. And generally thats demographic these festivals are aimed at.
• what you like about each image?
I love this image. I think its smart yet simple and its something you look at it takes you back to your child hood imagination be it he 'pirate' idea behind the ship. Something really appeals to me. The complementary color scheme i enjoy looking and this is image uses that well.
• how will it influence your poster?
I like the text in this poster. It actually forms line directing the focus to the title of the festival. I think ill try something similar.

Hi!

So im doing TV studio this semester too and we have to creat a news show. Im in charge of the weather segment so thought id give a go at the graphics for it so this is how it went!

Hi, So im going to give these images another go loading them up!

Neat so they worked. So you can see some fully finished such as the texture one in the middle at the top. I worked on each object separately then brought them together

Im really happy with how they look as my drawing skills arent that great and shows how much photoshoping them adds to the overall look

Little Red Riding hood

So this is my first post so ill include everything that i have been working on around this project. After week one I really set out to think about this in a different way. I generally get bored at work so I did a lot of sketching there which and then in a conversation with a friend about them being a vegetarian it hit me! My angle on little red riding hood came about. I wanted to portray a person who eats meat from my friends eyes as a vego.

ok so im having trouble loading images now so ill load them all in a separate post.

Well the pictures are of a stake being the wolf, and a Broccoli being little red riding hood. I took this view because to my friend they sometimes felt pressure from people to eat meat. Making me think that in the little red riding hood case maybe the wolf is a steak being a domineering character. And little red and piece of broccoli.

So thats it so far. I will try to get the images up soon!

I obviously hand drew my images. I did each one on a separate piece of paper each and then brought them together in photo shop.

For the First exercise. Coloring, I chose solid colors that best represented the characters and the item of food that they where being portrayed as. I have had a little bit of practice with photo shop before so used selection techniques such as the pen tool, magic wand, and magnetic lasso to make selections. Once selected i just filled in the selections with the chosen colors.

When I put the images up you will recognise that it is quiet "cartoony" I do like this look and that's why I chose to leave the background blank.

For the second part of the first assignment, texture. I really wanted to try and get the textures correct. I had a look on the internet at some photoshop tutorials and found a great one on how to make a wood grain texture which worked perfectly for my door.

What I did was start with a blank canvas and fill it in with a brown. I then added noise to the canvas. Put a motion blur on it and then duplicated the layer. I made the duplicated layer almost opaque and then added a poster edges to that layer. This really gave the wood grain effect. I then used the swirl tool to add in some knots!

I think the finish product for the door looks great!

For the steak i used a gradient and made the dominate colors red and black. For the fat around the edges i used a solid color and then a soft brush to give a little bit of dimension to it.

For Little red the broccoli I first colored it with solid colors. I then used different filters to gain the textured look. For her coat I had a tartan image stuck in my head for some reason. So i just created my own stamp on a blank canvas and then pasted it all over the selected area!
