So this is the Spotted Cow 08 festival poster that I found on the net (accessed 12/08/2009, http://mattcoleman.us/files/gimgs/43_sc08poster.jpg)
• Explain how the design concept is used.
I think it is a great example of the use of negative space. The milk bottle is completely isolated by the negative space and what works well is it is an unusual object to just be by itself. Its a modern 'pop art' style of image that draws you in and makes you want to read what small amount of text is on the poster.
• Comment on line, shape, texture and colour in the image.
There is minimal line in this picture, what line there is very vertical. It is a defining line that outlines the subect from the background but also creates a sense of 3D within the picture.
Shape again is minimal due the large amount of negative space. What shape does stand out is the puddle of milk at the bottom of the carton as the only white 'thing' on the page. Along with the iconic shape of the speech bubble there isn't a lot of shape in the image as there is say colour.
Most of the image is matt and is made up of solid colours giving it the pop art feel. So texture isn't really present the only thing i can pick up on it the roughness of the solid black line outlining the milk carton.
• what you like about each image?
I love the simplicity of this image. It works so well with the negative space. The simple colors that use the analogous style with Yellow and green sitting next to each other on the color wheel.
• how will it influence your poster?
I really like the idea of negative space in my work so I am going to try incorporate a large amount of it in my poster I also like the style of drawing this has been done in almost like a cartoon.

The Next poster that I want to have a look in regards to negative space is this, the 'Blue Notes Festival'. (accsessed 12/08/2009, http://www.stanwoodesign.com/archives/images/bluenotes.png)
• Explain how the design concept is used.
This poster is basically negative space, The text Jazz is surrounded completely by the negative space with the letter 'A' in jazz even being formed by the negative space. This really makes the word jazz stand out and make it clear what the festival is all about.
• Comment on line, shape, texture and colour in the image.
The way this poster has been designed means it actually lacks a lot of elements that would be found in a say more standard poster. It has no images, it is only made up of text, there is no line that provokes any sort of depth of field, it is a flat image made of solid colors. The colors are complementary with the orange and purple blue being opposite colors on the color wheel.
• what you like about each image?
I'm not sure if I like how simple this image is but I do like the solid colors
• how will it influence your poster?
I dont think i will be that influenced by this poster when it comes to creating mine even though like i said before I do like the use of negative space. But I dont like the use of just text
• Explain how the design concept is used.
This poster has again used negative space very well allowing room for text and also highlighting the silhouette and the image inside the silhouette. I think this is a really good idea and I like it a lot.
• Comment on line, shape, texture and colour in the image.
I feel like the line formed by the silhouette makes it feel like it is dancing I know this is obvious by looking at the silhouette but the line gives it movement the line of the image flows from left to right. As far as shape the silhouette is the obvious one it creates a window where we can look through to a girl who has a great contrast compared to the rest of the black and white image. She has a very smooth texture that reminds me of and elegance.
• what you like about each image?
What I like about this particular image is its ability to communicate what the festival is about. It is in a different language but just by looking at it I think that it would be some sort of european ethnic festival that celebrates where a certain culture comes from through song and dance.
• how will it influence your poster?
I really want to be able to communicate the theme/style of festival through my poster as well as this one does.
• Explain how the design concept is used. What I have discovered from this and the previous 3 images is that negative space will draw the eye to one particular image/shape, especially when the shape is very simplistic. In the festival posters it allows the information to be easily displayed and conveys the message really well, but in some cases makes it hard to establish what the festival is about.
• Comment on line, shape, texture and colour in the image.
Yet again I find myself looking at an image in that has no depth of field the line is very simple and the shapes 2D. This pop art style seems to be very appealing to my eye. There is no texture as its comprised of solid colors but I think that this simple graphic style really suits this sort of 'retro' comeback that seems to be part of modern young culture. And generally thats demographic these festivals are aimed at.
• what you like about each image?
I love this image. I think its smart yet simple and its something you look at it takes you back to your child hood imagination be it he 'pirate' idea behind the ship. Something really appeals to me. The complementary color scheme i enjoy looking and this is image uses that well.
• how will it influence your poster?
I like the text in this poster. It actually forms line directing the focus to the title of the festival. I think ill try something similar.
